Speaker Series: Wine and Brew Culture and its Positive Influence on the Economy

If you live in Michigan, then you don't have to be a wine or beer aficionado ... just throw a stone, and it's likely you'll hit one. In a state that ranks fifth in the nation for the number of breweries, aficionados have options - and these options are being utilized. The total amount of Michigan craft beer sold here has doubled in the past seven years, according to the Michigan Brewers Guild. Our wine industry, though long-established, is also growing in popularity across the nation.

So what gives? Perhaps the sustainable practices of these businesses and the embracing nature of supporting the "go local" movement has had a bigger impact than we know. I mean, even our drink choices are made in Michigan.

Beyond this, environmentally-friendly wine growing practices in the state are the rule rather than the exception, and there are over 20 artisan distilleries in Michigan now. Cheers to that!

Come learn about how all this fits into Michigan’s growing economy, farming sector and sustainability movement at Capital Gains' May Speaker Series, in partnership with Green Drinks Lansing (collaboration between Michigan Environmental Council and Greater Lansing Area Clean Cities).

The event will be held at the brand new Taps 25 located at 414 E. Michigan Ave. in downtown Lansing, on Friday May 4, from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Join us for refreshments and a lively panel discussion featuring top notch experts in the Michigan microbrewery, wine and distillery industry. Come meet new people, learn new things, and join the conversation.

Panelists include:
  • Dr. Kris Berglund: Michigan State University, Distinguished Professor of Chemical Engineering & Food Science, expert in distilled beverage technology
  • Kris Spaulding: Sustainability Director, Brewery Vivant in Grand Rapids
